Our client asked us to design the structure for a company task force to determine
how best to recommend a marketing strategy for the business, focusing particularly
on implementation requirements and considerations. Following the design of
the structure, the client asked us to participate in the twice a month meeting

Long-Term Domestic Demand For Steam Coal - Major Coal Mining Company
Analysis of the long-term domestic demand for steam coal. This study
was requested by a diversified energy company to provide information that
would assist the company to develop a long-term strategy in the coal business.
Extensive interviews were conducted with representatives of government, utilities,
transportation companies, power generation equipment manufacturers, and research
laboratories. The significant issues that impact both the supply and demand
for coal (including new coal utilization and technology, environmental regulations,
government energy policies, transportation systems, labor availability and
productivity, future industrial and utility energy requirements, potential
export markets, etc.) were analyzed in the process of the study. (264-1)
3. Determination Of Price And Marketability Of Western Steam Coal - Major
Coal Mining Company
Determination of price and marketability of western steam coal. The purpose
was to ascertain the long-term market price and degree of marketability of
the coal produced by two companies that were being considered for acquisition
by our client. We surveyed electric utility executives to determine their
degree of interest in coal with specifications similar to those of the potential
acquisition, and also interviewed others who contributed to the study objectives.
Then we calculated the freight cost to arrive at the market value of the coal
on an FOB-mine basis. The output of the study included our analyses of the
current and potential markets for each coal.(264-3)

Development and evaluation of strategic options for a major coal mining
and industrial company. This study entailed (a) identification of future market
opportunities in the company's businesses, (b) determination of future capital
requirements, and (c) prediction of future profitability return in the company's
existing businesses. Out of this work flowed the delineation of strategic
options, as well as judgment about the planning process that should be used
for the continual evaluation of these options.(145-30)
5. Evaluation Of Coal Export Opportunities For A Large U.S. Producer -
Major Coal Mining Company
Evaluation of coal export opportunities for a large U.S. producer. This
study involved an analysis of the developing size and structure of steam coal
trade between the United States and Western Europe. We interviewed thermal
coal traders and buyers in eight European countries, determined opportunities
and barriers for our client's production, and identified the optimum niche
in this market for the client. (283-8a)
6. Determination Of The Size And Nature Of The Steam Coal Market In The
Electrical Utility Industry In Europe - Major Coal
Mining Company
Determination of the size and nature of the steam coal market inn the
electrical utility industry in Europe. The purpose of this study was to identify
specific facts that would allow the client to take immediate and effective
action to serve this growing market off his present reserve base. Extensive
interviews were conducted with public and private electric utility planners
and fuel buyers in ten European countries. The information collected included
number, size, location, environmental restrictions, coal quality, and fuel
mix for all electric plants owned by twenty major European utility companies.
The project also analyzed extensively the transportation requirements for
moving coal into Western Europe from overseas. (283-8b)

Reserve - Major Coal Mining Company
Analysis of domestic market demand and price for coal from an Appalachian
reserve. The objective of this study was to develop a forecast of sales and
prices of coals from a potential acquisition. We interviewed numerous domestic
and foreign utility executives for their estimation of the desirability of
the company's coals and calculated FOB mine prices.(283-9)

9. Market Analysis Of A Metallurgical Coal Property - Major U.S. Chemical
& Industrial Company
Market analysis of a metallurgical coal property. We identified, through
interviews and analyses, market issues; figured market expectations; and projected
prices for the metallurgical coal produced by a division of a major industrial
company. Similarly, we evaluated the property and projected both production
costs and the ability of the property to produce necessary volume and consistent
quality. Our client used our findings to determine its future strategy in
the business.(130-6)
10. Marketing Review - Mining Equipment Manufacturer
Marketing review. We were asked by the President to review the activities
of the marketing and sales function with the objective of arriving at an overall
judgment as to the effectiveness of the function and to determine what areas
existed for improvement. Specifically we reviewed the organization and staffing,
competitive position, the marketing strategies (both domestic and foreign)
credit policy, trading and hedging, controls on exchange trading, the copper
supply and demand outlook, price forecasts, and the viability of the contractual
arrangements with customers. The work involved the review of key data at company
interviews with each management person in the marketing final report developed
areas of potential improvements, hedging strategies (310-34)
11. Marketing Review
- -Mining Equipment Manufacturer
Study for German company top management focused on the adequacy of the
marketing effort in selling German-manufactured pumps and valves into the
U.S. mining and construction industries. Part of this project involved making
recommendations involving increasing market share for our client.(683-2)
12. Development of Marketing Strategy - Australian Industrial Conglomerate
The work involved undertaking a variety of studies projecting revenues
and costs as well as developing a marketing strategy for the company's U.S.
coal subsidiaries, which included coal mines, port facilities and a coal brokerage
firm. The Chapter 11 proceeding was handled in the Washington Bankruptcy Court.
The objectives accomplished in our studies involved (1) evaluating the viability
of each of the company's operations, (2) developing a disposition program
for the assets to be sold, and (3) developing a short- and long-term marketing
strategy.

company's major coal suppliers - to the coal brokerage firm - to assess their
capability as reliable producers to the export market and to negotiate lower
prices for their coal (341-1).
13. Marketing Assessment - Major Copper Mine
Marketing assessment. Acted as a consultant on a large project for an
African copper company owned by its Government. Reviewed supply-and-demand
projections of cobalt to determine adequacy of assumptions and projections.(708-1)
